10 Questions with Dr Tay Tunn Lin

Published09 Feb 2022

How would you introduce yourself?

I’m a doctor specialising in endocrinology practising at Mount Alvernia, Mt Elizabeth Orchard, and Parkway East.

I’m also a mom to 2 boys. Being a doctor and a mom brings me great joy in life!

What motivated you to practice medicine?

Wanting to make a positive impact on people in a career that also allows me to be a real-life detective by solving health problems for others.

What's your specialty and why did you choose it?

I’m an endocrinologist - That means I see patients with conditions like diabetes, thyroid dysfunction, and other hormones presenting with irregular periods, severe osteoporosis, and salt imbalances in the body.

These conditions are mostly chronic ones and I can follow up on my patients through the different seasons of their lives, tweaking their treatment according to their needs at different points. There is an art to managing chronic conditions, not just applying the most up-to-date science. And that makes it challenging yet satisfying.

What is your typical day like?

It will start with sending my son to school, then off to see patients in the wards, before I see patients in my clinic. At the end of the day, I’d catch up on medical updates, before checking in on inpatients again and heading home to spend time with my family.

Why should young doctors choose to specialise in Endocrinology?

You get to build long-term relationships with patients managing chronic diseases. And piecing together different investigations to solve certain endocrine conditions can be challenging and satisfying.

What are your goals for the future?

I hope to increase awareness for diabetes care amongst younger adults, there is a major increase in incidences of diabetes in our younger population nowadays.

Have you found anything particularly helpful in your journey to where you are today?

To hold dear what inspired us to be doctors in the first place and to be resilient because there will be plenty of obstacles and frustrations. And also to make sure we care for our own well-being even as we have to look after patients.

What do you recommend students entering medical school?

Keep an open mind, rotate through the different specialties before subspecialising.

What do you do for fun?

Explore different parks and nature playgrounds in Singapore. Baking for my family!

Where can we go to learn more about you and your work?
