10 Questions with Prof Tan Thiam Chye

Published16 Feb 2022

How would you introduce yourself?

Most patients know me as TC Tan (My initials). A busy Deliveryman 24 / 7 (Almost like Grab!)

What motivated you to practice medicine?

I wanted a profession that is meaningful and can help humanity.

What's your specialty and why did you choose it?

I am an Obstetrician and Gynaecologist. Pregnancy is the most miraculous process and I am most glad to join my patients in their journey of being new parents. The joy of getting pregnant and going through delivery is so indescribable. Simply awesome.

What’s your work-life balance as an OBGYN?

There is NO work-life balance as an OBGYN. I am devoted to my patients 24/7. My handphone is with me 24/7, even when I am resting/sleeping. I haven’t gone to watch a movie or concert for years.

What are your goals for the future?

My goal is to make pregnancy safer and more patient-centric. My wish-list is to add an element of remote monitoring of pregnancy care at the comfort of their home or when patients travel. Stillbirth or intrauterine death is still topmost worry of all pregnant mothers.

What are some of the biggest challenges you've faced and obstacles you've had to overcome?

Covid crisis is certainly the biggest challenge in my medical career. It has changed many aspects of healthcare. From infection control to telemedicine, we will never be the same again.

What’s been a highlight of your profession?

Every birth is a highlight of my career. I cherish the moment I deliver every baby and hand the precious baby to the parents. That moment is magical.

What's your advice for doctors who are just starting out?

Find a specialty that will keep you passionate for the rest of your life. That is the only way to keep the fire in you burning. Don’t think of the dollars and cents.

What do you do for fun?

Reading…also on continual medical education (unfortunately)

Where can we go to learn more about you and your work?
